Bath Spa University
Bath Spa University is a leading education provider for the creative industries with a clear focus on creativity, culture, enterprise and education.
The institution dates right back to 1852 where the Bath School of Art was founded as a result of Government debate on concerns about the strength of international design and manufacture at the time of the 1851 Great Exhibition. In 1946 Bath Training College was opened on the Newton Park campus, as part of the post-war initiatives to fill wartime teaching shortages by a one-year course ex-service people. As a recognised collection of important and established learning institutes for the South West of England, it was agreed that Bath Spa University should be formed as a University in August 2005.
As a medium sized university, students benefit from a close-knit, friendly community and have regular contact with tutors. We currently have around 7,000 students studying at either undergraduate, masters and PhD level from over 80 different countries.
Building on its long and solid reputation, Bath Spa is now widely regarded as a high quality centre of excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and provides a top quality student experience for UK and Overseas students. Its focus on creativity culture and enterprise is also well recognised, and in 2014/15, the University was ranked as one of the top six creative universities in the UK by 'Which?'
Both UK and international students have independently confirmed their satisfaction with Bath Spa. In 2015/16, the UK National Student Survey found that Bath Spa scored 90% overall satisfaction from final year students placing it amongst the top 20 universities in the UK. A similar survey for overseas students was undertaken by Igraduate (the International Student Barometer ISB) found that for international students Bath Spa rated international student support as number one of all UK Universities for personal tutoring. Overall student support was ranked as 6th in the UK, social interaction was ranked as 6th and overall day to day living was also 6th. Bath remains the number one safest city in which to study.
Regular rankings by the UK national press place Bath Spa in and around a mid table position. The University is ranked 58 in the Times Good University Guide 2016 and the 6th best University in the UK for teaching quality. It also highly respected by the Times table which has ranked the University as the 8th Best Modern University in the UK.
The University has begun a process of internationalisation and in order to build its balanced vision of the future, it has forged a partnership network all around the world. Keen to create students as global citizens, the University has an ambitious internationalisation strategy to encourage international opportunities for both UK and Overseas students. The University was a founding member of the Global Academy of Liberal Arts. The University now offers study opportunities for students in Hong Kong, USA, Singapore and the UAE through its Transnational Education partnerships.
Bath Spa is a vibrant, diverse and friendly community of students and staff, all of whom are enterprising in their approach. Academic staff are highly respected in their fields of expertise and many remain practitioners in their field of work / study. Not just a centre of excellent teaching, the University has strengthened its research capacity in key areas such as Creative Writing, Media and Art and Design. In the most recent REF submission in 2014/5, Bath Spa tripled its volume of internationally excellent and world leading research, since the previous Research Assessment Exercise in 2008. More than half of the staff submitted was rated as world leading or internationally excellent. The university's submission featured research in Art and Design, Education, English and Creative Writing, History, Music and Performing Arts, and Communication Culture and Media. Notable Alumni include the Late Dame Anita Roddick founder of the Body Shop and the turner prize winner, Sir Howard Hodgkin.
The University is well-known for offering courses which focus on creativity such as art and design, creative writing, music and performing arts and fashion. A strong cultural element also runs through other subjects available including history, English literature, heritage and film. There are also various science and business related programmes available. Students enjoy the ability to combine programmes or specialise as they wish. All courses are underpinned by state-of-the-art facilities, collaborative learning spaces, enterprise, careers support, and professional advice and guidance. The University has excellent links with business and industry and students have the opportunity to gain important work experience during their time of study with us. 93% of our graduates find themselves in work or further study.
The UNESO world heritage city of Bath is well- known as being one of the world’s most beautiful cities in England and is ranked as one of the safest places to study in the UK. It boasts stunning architectural and historical sites such as the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent. With its vibrant community, rich culture, and mix of coffee bars, restaurants and theatres, there is no surprise that Bath is home to over 25,000 students. Bath Spa University students play at big part in the festivals and community life including the International Music festival, the Bath Film Festival and the Bath Literature Festival
Investing in the future is a key priority to Bath Spa and 2015 saw the opening of a leaning Commons at the Newton Park campus. This included teaching rooms, digital spaces, a café, and bookable group working rooms as well as an outdoor amphitheatre! It also has the best TV studios in Southwest England rivalling the facilities of the BBC . Student accommodation is also improving. On top of existing housing resources, in 2015 the first phase at the Newton Park campus consisted of the provision of 561 new bed spaces housed in Individual ‘houses’ for up to ten students all with en suite bedrooms. Further developments include brand new accommodation in Twerton Mill for 2015/16. Further, in September 2016 will unveil and open the beautiful and highly prestigious student residences in Green Park, in the heart of the Bath city centre.
In addition to being challenged and fulfilled academically, Bath Spa puts great emphasis on paying attention to your overall student experience. The students union has a huge amount of activities on offer though its volunteering opportunities, clubs and student societies. The University competes in British Universities and college sports leagues (BUCS) and put on a range of events throughout the year.
The International Relations Team support, help and guide all International and EU students before, during and after their time with us. Experts in the team have specialist knowledge of countries they work with and it is very important to the team that your transition from your home country to Bath Spa goes as smoothly as possible.
We try to keep the fees for International students as low as possible, and fees in 2015/16 for a full time undergraduate course are £11,600 per year and £11, 600 for post graduate study. We also try and provide the best scholarships that we can, but these are as generous as they can when placed against our relatively low fee base. Although each country has set entry requirements, these are looked at in conjunction with experience and passion for the course. All International students wanting to study at Bath Spa must generally have a minimum of ITELS 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for post graduate courses. Students not meeting the required standards are invited to attend a pre-sessional English courses which are designed to prepare you with the skills needed to advance either onto further study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
