Requirements for a UK Student Visa (Tier 4):

It is mandatory for international students from outside the UK or EU to apply for a student visa. A points-based system determines whether or not you are eligible to study in the UK which is called a Tier 4 Student Visa.

Student Visa Rules:
This is how to achieve the 40 points you require to apply for a student visa:

Step 1- Course confirmation: Firstly, you must have Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a university approved by the UK Border Agency (UKBA).
All institutions must have or have applied for Highly Trusted Status (HTS) on the UKBA Tier 4 Sponsor list. This achieves 30 points. Colleges with an ‘A’ rating can also issue CAS numbers. This ‘A’ rating is transitional for 12 months and all colleges with an ‘A rating’ have to apply for HTS status within the specified 12month period. Each of the universities on the Study London website have all been granted the Highly Trusted Status.

Step 2- Funding: It is mandatory to provide evidence showing that you have the necessary funding to cover your course tuition and your living costs. (10 points).
On average, tuition fees are £11,000 per year, however they can vary from £4,000 to £22,000 depending on the institution. You will need a minimum of £1,000 to cover monthly living costs if you plan to live in inner city London. Outer London is slightly less expensive and will require about £800 per month.

Check the full criteria for eligibility at the UK Border Agency. Further information is also available on the UKCISA website.

In order to begin your visa application, you must have been supplied with Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Only apply for a UK Student Visa after you have been accepted onto a course, however make sure you are eligible first. After being accepted onto a course, that university can assist you in the application process.

Top Tip: Do not travel to the UK for study without a valid Student Visa! For guidance, consult the British Embassy or Consulate in your country or seek advice on the UK Border Agency website.

Costs for UK Student Visa:
A Tier 4 General UK Student Visa varies in cost depending on where you are applying from:

•Inside the UK by post: £394
•Outside the UK: £289

It is essential to consider the cost of living in the UK, especially London, and to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to do so. So remember to budget correctly.

Note: The information provided is relevant for the visa costs in effect from 06 April 2012. As the costs may change, it is essential to check the official requirements on the UK Border Agency website before you apply.
