The Pearson Test of English is in other terms an English proficiency test, considered one of the most accurate ways in which to rate the test taker’s English speaking, writing, listening and reading ability. The test is specifically tailored to non-native speaking individuals who aim to attend an English speaking University or institute of higher education. This test is similar to the IELTS or TOEFL examinations, in that it is recognised by institutions worldwide and considered a necessary step, enabling foreign students to progress into the university course of their choosing. The PTE Academic in particular is also approved by the UK Border Agency for all visa applications.

The ability to communicate efficiently in English is absolutely essential to academic success for university or college students studying in an environment within which English is the primary language of instruction. Endorsed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the PTE test’s fundamental purpose is to accurately assess a test taker’s grasp of the language and decipher whether or not they have the ability required to proceed into higher education. The University of London and Columbia University are just two universities that hold this test in high regard.

The PTE test is a three hour long computer based test, held in a secure test environment that can be hosted in a number of learning centres and educational institutes in over fifty different countries. Candidates will be tested, as aforesaid, to evaluate speaking, writing, listening and reading capabilities, by means of missing word puzzles, interactive listening and speaking exercises and written tasks, just to name a few.  In order for nervous test takers to prepare themselves, the Pearson website do have a number of online practice tests to purchase and have a few example questions available. Reading recommendations are also provided. Once the test is taken, it will take only five business days to process your results, which you can swiftly send over to your chosen university through the Pearson website.

The cost to take the test is £155 with a late fee of £193.75 if a test taker applies in the forty eight hours before the test is due to take place. Candidates must be over the age of eighteen and you must be able to provide a valid form of I.D. on the agreed date of your test, such as a passport or a document containing your full name, your signature, your date of birth and a recent photo, though booking is simple affair – you can either book a slot online at or ring directly to arrange your test date.
